Saving the Island Jersey: Join the BBRT in Preserving a Rare Breed with a £2,000 Goal

The BBRT is committed to the preservation of original population cattle breeds native to the United Kingdom. With increasng appreciation of the value of low input animals which can be farmed sustainably without costly and environmentally damaging feeds.

An iconic British breed on the absolute edge of extinction in it’s original population is the Jersey cow. The beautifuI Island Jersey has been exported to all corners of the world, but until recently, it was illegal to import back onto the Island, so that the cattle on Jersey possessed genetics untainted by any external factors. In recent years this has changed, and the pure Island Jersey genetics are now possessed by very few animals.

The BBRT plans to acquire two original population Jersey heifers to form the basis of an original population herd here on the mainland UK. Funds are needed to buy the heifers and bring them to the mainland where they will be cared for by BBRT volunteer farmers. Planned embryo collection from the heifers will enable numbers of pure calves to be maximised. Please consider donating to our Island Jersey project. We need to raise £2,000 to purchase the heifers.
